Best Diets To Lower Blood Sugar

quick weight loss

In a randomized study conducted in Naples, Italy, in 2009, researchers concluded that people who followed a low carbohydrate Mediterranean type diet, less than fifty percent of each days calories from carbohydrates, as compared to people who followed a low fat diet, less than 30% of each days calories from fat, were less likely to have to begin taking medication for diabetes. At the conclusion of the four year study, forty four percent of the patients on the low carbohydrate diet needed blood glucose lowering drugs, in comparison, seventy percent of patients that engaged in the low fat diet required these drugs. Of course in all cases, lowering your body weight will help, however engaging in a quick weight loss diet, can be tricky for diabetics.

I received the unfortunate news, that I was a type II diabetic, in July of 1989. I immediately started closely following the American Diabetes Association diet. My blood glucose kept getting worse. I began taking oral diabetes medications that had to be continuously altered. Control of my condition was elusive, nothing I was doing seemed to work well.

Eventually, I tried the Atkins low carbohydrate diet. Within two weeks my blood glucose levels were normal and I started to taper off on my medications. Eventually, I was able to stop taking any medicine for diabetes control. In addition, I lost weight, which helped. My physicians were surprised at the results, and advised me to continue with my diet. They were skeptical about the Atkins diet, but they couldn't ignore my results. A good thing about this diet is that it helped me lose weight as well, it wasn't rapid weight loss, but it was steady.

There are some diets, like the Mediterranean Diet that are healthy, but are composed of too many simple carbohydrates for a diabetic. At the time of my diagnosis, I was informed that all alcohol containing drinks would have adverse effects on my blood sugar levels. In my case, this was a sad revelation, but I have always kept it in mind.

In 1997, Dr. Richard K. Bernstein came out with his book, Dr. Bernstein's Diabetes Solution. Numerous readers of this book are strong proponents of it, because it enabled them to lower their blood sugar and reduce their weight, without taking any medication.

Both the Atkins Diet and Dr. Bernstein's program can be found online. All the information on the Atkins site is free of charge and it even allows you to chart your progress.

Doctor. Bernstein's web site gives you a link for ordering a HbA1c test that you can perform yourself for about fifteen dollars.and it provides you with the results in about five minutes.

Consult with a doctor, but at the end of the day, you must take personal responsibility for your health. Look at the options and make the choice that works the best for you. It's your health!
