Very few people realize the profound effect that weight has on diabetes. Even the instances of gestational diabetes are far greater in those that are overweight than in people that are not. Type 2, or adult onset diabetes is more commonly found in overweight people than those that are within their 'ideal' weight ranges. In fact, almost 90% of those with Type 2 diabetes are overweight. If you suffer from Type 2 diabetes, then the best gift you could can give yourself is the gift of getting your weight under control.
Amongst those people that suffer from Type 2 diabetes, about 40 percent will have high blood pressure, which is yet another condition that is believed to be worse by carrying excess weight. Being overweight could also lead to a condition that is known as insulin resistance, where the body will no longer respond to the insulin that is needed to help your body use sugar & glucose as fuel on a cellular level.
There are quite a few things you can do to help yourself if you have recently been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes or have been told you are at risk for this devastating disease.
Lose Some Weight
I know this is much easier said than done. Dieting is rarely ever an easy thing to do for the average person. But, if you do not start now to take drastic steps toward getting yourself in the best health possible, you may not be able to enjoy a quality of life you had planned for your later years. Let your diagnosis be the motivation you need and make plans to enjoy spending time with your grand children and even seeing them graduate college.
Take Control
Fight it standing up. Do not sit down and allow Diabetes to control you. Stand up tall and take back control of your body. This will need to be a fight to the finish and if you let it, diabetes could be your end. If you fight it standing up, lose the weight, get out there and exercise, listen to the doctor's orders and follow them. Find the strength within you to battle this disease head on. You will be amazed at what can happen when you make the decision to stand up and fight for your own health.
Get active
Find some activities that you enjoy and get out there and do them. Don't make those activities passive activities either. You can get active in your home and avoid feeling embarrassed by utilizing one of the great activities on you kinect system like the zumba fitness game. I love this game! It is so much fun to play and you start off slow and build up. As you get more fit and can handle more, you can try taking up one of the Kinect sports games. Even if you just go out for a short walk everyday - you should get out there! Enjoy some quality time in the sun. Pick some flowers with the little one. Take up golf. Do what ever it takes to get yourself up and moving every day in order to help you remember why you want to live as long as you can in the first place.
Watch what you are eating
Garbage in, garbage out, right? You will definitely have a strict diet once you have been diagnosed with diabetes. This means that you absolutely must follow your dietary restrictions. You will need to learn to live within these limits in order to live life to the fullest you can. The amazing thing is that there are all kinds of foods available that are friendly to those with diabetes that weren't around just a few short years ago. It is quite possible to live and eat quite nicely with diabetes if you stick to your plan.
